#EPP083 Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT)

A Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) is an electromechanical sensor that converts linear displacement into an electrical signal. It's a type of transformer used for measuring linear movement and is a core component in LVDT-type displacement sensors. LVDTs are known for their high accuracy, long lifespan, and robust performance, making them suitable for various industrial applications.

Project Duration:7 Days

In this project we developed a LVDT Sensor System. They operate based on electromagnetic induction. An alternating current (AC) is applied to a primary coil, which induces a voltage in two secondary coils. The position of a movable core within the coils affects the voltage induced in each secondary coil, and the difference between these voltages represents the displacement.

An LVDT consists of a primary coil, two secondary coils, and a movable core (typically made of a ferromagnetic material).

LVDTs offer high resolution, long life, and robust performance in harsh environments. They also provide a high degree of accuracy and repeatability.

They are used in a wide range of applications, including robotics, automation, aerospace, and medical devices. Examples include measuring vibration, stress, and actuator movement.
